Wind Family // Life Is Beautiful Session

Friends as much as I love shooting outdoors, there is a time and place for indoor photos! For instance when a adorable baby boy joins your family in December.

We met the Winds early last year and had the privilege of turning there beautiful home into a photo studio for the morning to capture some newborn and family portraits. We loved this session, because of how relaxed it was...baby spits up all over Dads shirt? No problem, he can just run upstairs and grab a new one! Kiddos need a snack break? The kitchen is across the hall!

So here they are, the six Winds with some very sweet little personalities & loads of cuteness!!!

Manning Family // Life Is Beautiful Session

As a photographer, you learn to work in all kinds of weather, but I have to say that with the variety of temperature we've had over the last few weeks, I'm so grateful that the evening we spent with the Manning family felt more like mid August than the first Saturday in May!

We had such a delightful time with this family, from creating studio style portraits in the comfort of their own home to playing on the beach. There was so much love and some truly priceless moments that we felt so privileged to capture.

And what you might not see by just scrolling through these images is how dedicated these parents were to getting genuine smiles on the faces of their little ones. When kids are hot and tired, it's not easy to keep them smiling, so major credit for all these super adorable expressions goes to mom and dad for knowing their kids, taking snack breaks and having the attitude that made photo taking fun for everyone! So now you know the secret to great family photos.  Enjoy some of our favourite shots of these four.

Rocky Mountain Engagement // Let's Reminisce

Confession time: I am the worst at posting #throwbackthursday or #flashbackfriday images on Instagram. I'm a fan of the concept but somehow my timing is always off. I will come across old photos on a Monday or in this case Saturday but always forget by Thursday. Maybe that's why I love when Facebook tells me a have memories to look back on, Facebook doesn't discriminate about which day of the week it is. Memories can happen any day! And while I'll agree that Facebook doesn't get everything right, this little feature never gets old. I for one never ceases to be amazed when they show me what was happening in my life this exact day last year, the year before that or even five years ago!

I've always enjoyed looking through old photographs and believe that memories, just like fine wine or the really gooood cheese, become better with age! This is part of the reason photography has always been important to me, pictures take me right back to the moment. When I look at an image from the past, I can relive it as if it was yesterday. Pictures fill in all the blanks. They help me to remember well.

And truth be told I've taken thousands (in all honesty, its probably more like hundreds of thousands) of images that I have never shared online. I have hard drives chalked full, terabytes upon terabytes of photos from my blog-less years! Some our my own personally memories, others belong to our incredible brides and grooms or our Let There Be Light families that have trusted us along the way. So after looking though some of these pictures, I've decided to start a new series pulling images from the archives and sharing them on the same day that the event took place.

I'm calling it, "Let's Reminisce", and over the next year I will be sharing everything from past Weddings & Life is Beautiful sessions to travel photos.  I'd love for you to join me on these little trips down memory lane.

So to start it all off, Facebook reminded me this morning that May 21st happens to be the day we took Christopher and Samantha's rocky mountain engagement photos! This couple is pretty amazing, and I'll never forget meeting them for the first time in Canmore to talk wedding plans & take their engagement photos! We even got to do one of our favourite hikes, the Grassi Lakes Trial while on the job.

One of the beautiful thing and memorable things about this couple was when they talked about their relationship, they knew the importance of commitment; and spoke of building a marriage that would stand the test of time. They had chosen each other and they were excited to vow, "Till death do us part".  Well, this summer they will be five years married and still going strong on their journey of lifelong love!

Baby Ellie // Life Is Beautiful Session

So I'm just warning you, I have photographed some seriously cute babies recently. And there are serious perks to shooting newborns, not only are your clients completely adorable, but you also get to cuddle the baby between takes... especially when she's family. Yes, I'm related to this little sweetheart and her amazing parents! Micah is my first cousin and it's been so special to capture some big milestones for them over the past few years. First engagement photos after he asked Lorelei to marry him, then their wedding and now baby photos!!! I love watching this family grow and all you have to do it look at the photos to know how very happy they are to be a family of three!

If one feels the need of something grand, something infinite,
something that makes one feel aware of God,
one need not go far to find it.
I think that I see something deeper,
more infinite, more eternal than the ocean
in the expression of the eyes of a little baby

McLaren Family // Life Is Beautiful Session

I'm excited to be able to share this beautiful session with all of you.

There is a great story behind these pictures.  And it all starts back in 2012 when Sarah contacted me to set up a secret photo shoot as a surprise for their mom's birthday! We conspired and planned a time she would be away to capture some portraits of her five kids on their acreage. We used her birth date as the gallery password, and it turned out to be a lovely surprise for her! And those pictures have been on their walls ever since. But time passes quickly and kids have a way of growing up. So four years latter, it was Dad's turn to be surprised! Which is why I couldn't share these pictures earlier. It was top secret, until his birthday!

I love capturing siblings together. That bond is so close to my heart and therefore one of my favourite relationships to photograph.  On top of that this family just knows how to have a good time, and how to laugh!!! (it may or may not have been my posing demonstrations they found funny) but at some points I was the one laughing too hard to take pictures. Add to that the gorgeous spring sunshine, some chickens, the family dog, oh, and the bull who knocked down the fence and you have all the ingredients of a phenomenally a fun photo shoot!

Life isn't a matter of milestones, but of moments.

Smith Family // Life is Beautiful Session

All the best things in life are worth waiting for! Babies are definitely high up on the list of "bests".

We've been anticipating the addition of this little one ever since last fall, when we had the privilege meeting this wonderful family and capturing a life is beautiful session for them in the season of anticipation while the leaves were turning orange & yellow.

And now it's spring, and along with green leaves and robins singing, came the arrival of their precious little girl! She couldn't be sweeter, or more loved by her Mommy, Daddy and big brother!

I'll never forget this little girls birthday, because it happens to be the same as mine! It was so special to photograph her at just six days old. This family is beautiful and the warm and relaxed atmosphere in their home made for some really sweet and intimate moments.

"SOMETIMES THE LITTLEST THINGS TAKE UP THE MOST ROOM IN YOUR HEART"

- Winnie The Pooh

This adorable little hat with the blossom on it was custom made by the very talented Elisabeth S. who just started selling them! I'm in love with her work and ordered three more to use in future newborn sessions. They are so incredibly cute! I'm going to devote a whole blog post to her lovely handiwork in the future, but if want to know how you can get one for yourself, leave a comment bellow I'll let you know how you can connect with her.

Spring Bling

Every spring Global Wonders releases a new line of stunning handcrafted jewelry, created by incredibly inspiring women who have escaped lives of sexual exploitation. And every year those who attend the annual Spring Bling event held right here in Calgary are the first to see and have access to purchase these jewels for a cause!

This year's event was absolutely lovely and such a pleasure to photograph. With horderves served by the amazing staff at the Danish Canadian Club, live violin music & fresh flowers designed by Lori Bjorkman of Lorie's Pots and ProjectsThe main event was a fashion show sponsored Global Wonders style ambassador Becky Kung of the blog Velvet & Vino, who did an amazing job styling & coordinating the show and LE CHÂTEAU who provided all the beautiful outfits worn by the models. Make-up was done by a fantastic group of artists from The Body Shop. Thanks to all the lovely models who volunteered their time be a part of this evening as well as the dedicated team of Servants Anonymous Foundation volunteers who worked behind the scenes serving in numerous ways to make the evening the grand success that is was.

Finally I want to acknowledge all the wonderful women who attended this event, who not only got some stylish new jewelry but became educated about human trafficking and gave so generously & compassionately. Truly the most beautiful part of the whole evening, was seeing women touched by the stories of other women and wanting to make a difference.

Now for the best part, for all of you who missed this fabulous event but are wishing you could have been there, the Global Wonders spring line is now available for you to purchase online! So as soon as you finish reading this blog post and seeing all the gorgeous necklaces, bracelets & earring sets that would go perfectly with your Easter outfit next weekend, you can go straight to their website and do a little shopping!

Sincerely,

chenoa allyse

Enlighten // "Say NO to AUTO"

This is the first post in the Enlighten series of how-to photography posts I’m writing for friends who want to learn how to take better photos! So if you’re excited about taking pictures and wanting to know more, then you're in the right place!

photo tips

I've loved teaching photography to up and coming photographers for the last five years through my Kids with Cameras program & along the way there have been many of friends who have expressed interest and told me that they wish they could take my class. While I would love to be able to teach each of you in person, my hope is that I will be able to help even more people though this series of blog posts than I can one on one.

So here it is; the first instalment of Enlighten for all you photo taking enthusiasts!

Let's get started!

When you look at the top of your SLR Camera there should be a mode dial with all kinds of letters and icons on it. Each of those represents a mode which will allow your camera to perform in a specific way. Most people never realize the incredible potential their camera was designed for because the only mode they ever use is automatic, or as we affectionately referred to it in photography school: the evil green box!

WHY IS AUTO SO BAD?

Well to sum is up in one sentence; the evil green box allows your camera to think it’s smarter than you!  Auto mode basically means your camera has full control and gets to call all the shots; the result being consistent, mediocre photos. Auto mode turns what can be a very powerful tool into a bit of a monster.

In other words setting your camera in auto completely eliminates your own creative genius by putting your camera in charge. I promise you; you are smarter than your camera.

If you’ve ever had anxiety over what might happen if you switch your camera out of auto mode, it’s time to realize that there’s nothing to be afraid of! First of all let me assure you, you’re not going to break it! And you can always switch back if you need to.  But I’m betting you probably won’t, because once you unleash your potential to take completely incredible photos…who would ever want to go back?

To grow past our fears we need to face them. So the first step is to decide you want to go beyond just pressing the shutter button and learn what your camera is really capable of. In order to create amazing photographs, you are going to have to learn to tell your camera what to do.

Now if I'm being honest, it is true that once you begin this journey not all of your photos are going to turn out perfectly.  And that’s OK! I guarantee you’ll learn way more from your mistakes then you ever will shooting in auto! So feel free to make a few.

Now if you're a practical person you might be thinking. Ok, so if I'm not supposed to use auto, what mode should I use?

Well, that's a good question, but there really isn’t a short answer. We will look at the most common modes and when/how to use each one in future blog posts, but if you want to get started today here are a few you might want to try:

ALTERNATIVES TO AUTO MODE

Program – Program Mode is just a baby step up from auto, so really you won’t notice too much of a difference. Your camera is still making most of the choices for you, but there are some handy differences! For one thing, your flash will no longer pop up automatically whenever it feels like it. You will be in control of when and if you want to use it! In some of your camera's switching to program will also allow you to move your focus point around manually, instead of the camera always choosing what to focus on. This is really helpful when it comes to learning composition. Last but not least you also have the power to choose your own ISO & white balance. If you don’t know what ISO or white balance is, no worries, that’s something else we will cover in future Enlighten posts.

Portrait – One of the questions I get most often is, "How do you get that blurry background look in my photos?" Well there are about three different factors all of which can help create a background that is out of focus, so once again it’s a blog post in and of itself. But in portrait mode your camera will know that you want to separate your subject from the background. So it’s going to choose a large aperture (smaller f-stop #) in order to achieve what is referred to as a shallow depth of field [meaning the background will be blurry]. This is a great all purpose mode, especially when shooting a single subject.

Landscape – If on the other hand your not shooting a single person or focusing on just one thing, you may want to try landscape mode. For group shots or (you guessed it) landscapes; this mode is going to tell your camera to do the exact opposite of portrait mode. It will choose a small aperture (larger f-stop#) in order to create a large depth of field, which basically just means both the background and the foreground will be in focus.

A or Av

Aperture Priority- this is my favourite mode to recommend. But it does require you have at least some prior knowledge of photography. If you understood my references to camera settings in the sections about Portrait and Landscape modes, then you probably know what an f-stop is and how it is related to your camera’s aperture. If you know that much, then turn your mode dial the A and select any aperture, your camera will instantly match it with the appropriate shutter speed to achieve a correct exposure and your good to go! You can change your aperture at anytime and your camera will react by changing the shutter speed for you.

Please note there are so many different makes and models of camera’s, and some manufacturers have chosen to set things up differently, so you might need to consult your camera manual if something I’ve written isn't making sense. The camera manual is a photographer’s best friend!

DON'T STOP CAPTURING LIFE'S BEAUTIFUL MOMENTS

As we wrap this up I also want to make sure you know what I’m not saying: I’m not saying, "Never shoot in auto again - Ever."

There are times when putting your camera in auto mode will help ensure you get a usable photo. And that’s important.  Especially if you are responsible for capturing a once in a lifetime moment; so if you’re documenting a birthday party this weekend or taking a family photo with grandma or shooting in any situation that causes you to feel pressured for time, go right ahead and shoot in auto until you've had a little more practice. Kudos to you for having your camera in hand recording life’s beautiful moments! Please never stop.

That being said, if you’re ready to really jump in and explore the world of photography then it’s time to take the first step out of your comfort zone.

Spin that mode dial, and say no to auto!

Sincerely,

chenoa allyse

THE BLOG - If you're reading this, I think it's safe to assume that you've successfully located the blog. I'm looking forward to sharing more here in the future, but for today scroll down to read how I came to have a blog or just keep scrolling see some really cute photos that you won't find in the galleries.

THE REVIEWS - Some of our past brides and grooms were kind enough to help me create a fun new page for our website (and may have made me cry in the process) by writing about the Let There Be Light Wedding Experience in their own words.

WEB ADDRESS - We are now located at www.lettherebelightphoto.com
Why the change? Well that's actually a long story. The short answer is it's shorter!!!
The long answer would require a blog post of it's own.  The good news is you will still find me by typing in www.lettherebelightphotography.com :)

And that applies to to my email address as well, you can now get a hold of me at chenoa@lettherebelightphoto.com but chenoa@lettherebelightphotography.com will still work too.
